It’s not all about APC or PDP, its about a sitting governor being filmed collecting huge amounts of $$$. An attempt by the state assembly to investigate the matter (that could have led to an exoneration) was met by the impeachment of the speaker, followed by a court injunction forbidding the investigation. There was no attempt as far as I know to provide the people with an explanation for the funds, rather the Governor’s defence lay in attempts to discredit the video as fake, a retinue of foreign based experts came to de-authenticate the video. Up till today all efforts to debunk the video have proven…inconclusive.
The arguments go on ;
It’s an attempt to disgrace Buhari! Was Buhari in the video? The governor was not appointed by Buhari, he was elected by the people of Kano and they can elect him out if they so wish.
Voting for Abba is like voting for Kwankwaso, Kwankwaso will be in charge, maybe, but do we need to be reminded of Saraki Senior vs Saraki Junior how did that end?
Ah!, APC cannot loose Kano to PDP, Kano is APC. This political dispensation saw PDP winning Kano in 1999, PDP lost Kano to ANPP in 2003. By 2011 Kano State went back to the PDP and APC in 2015. Historically Kano politics has leaned towards the opposition with NEPU holding sway in the First Republic and PRP in the Second Republic, it may return to its political roots 2019. That being said you cannot predict kano politics, it is a living breathing creature with a mind of its own.
At the end of the day it all boils down to the simple issue of perception, how would the world see us and what would we think of ourselves if we allowed the return of a governor whom the entire world (and maybe even some alien species) had seen on video collecting large amounts of foreign currency of unknown origin. How can we proudly beat our chests and claim we had rejected the PDP presidential contender because he is corrupt (allegedly), and then in the same sweeping motion re-elect a governor who may or may not have been filmed pocketing large sums of foreign exchange without any credible explanation just because he is an APC governor?
Where is Farouk Lawan, also from Kano, whose brilliant political career was truncated on mere allegations (no video here) of impropriety, how can we claim the moral high ground? If this were not Nigeria the governor wouldn’t have survived a week, and if he did then he would have had to provide incontrovertible evidence of the legitimacy of the exchange. Ganduje may be a great governor but as a public servant and more importantly an elected official he has to hold himself to a higher level of accountability and public scrutiny. But it is all down to the people of Kano, they will decide where their political destiny lies as they have always done.
